Promoting the study and teaching of Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised
April 2010: Members judged four teams of students enrolled in the Health Occupation Students of American at the Clarion Meridian Convention Center. Later in the month, five members traveled by van to Stillwater and judged parli-teams enrolled in FCCLA. Also, members attended the Unit meeting/membership drive held at Mazzio’s Pizza to celebrate Parliamentary Law Month. March 2010: Adopted a motion to budget money for next year to help promote the FCCLA parliamentary competitions throughout the state. A committee was formed to explore different approaches to this endeavor and a recommendation was made by the committee to give a workshop for the FCCLA teachers throughout the state who have parli-pro teams or who are interested in forming parli-pro teams. August 2009: Unit members met with health instructors at the Clarion Hotel. Ideas on parliamentary procedure were shared during round table discussions and suggestions were given to help prepare students for parli-pro competitive events.
In the spring of 2008, members judged parliamentary procedure competitions of FCCLA and HOSA. In the Fall of 2006, members of the the Sooner Unit traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and presented a two-hour morning parliamentary procedure workshop and a two-hour afternoon workshop to two classes of Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA). HOSA is a student organization whose mission is to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. HOSA students compete in state and national competitive events programs, one of which is parliamentary procedure. In 2004 and 2005, the Sooner Unit mentored and coached students at Oklahoma City's NW Classen High School Parliamentary Procedure Youth Group, in preparation for parliamentary competitions at the district and state level. This Youth Group was recently charted by the National Association of Parliamentarians under the sponsorship of the Sooner Unit, and is one of only about a dozen Youth Groups nationwide. Way to go, NW Classen and Sooner Unit! It is most enjoyable to see the students improve in their understanding and competence as they learn and practice correct parliamentary procedure. In the Fall of 2004 and the Fall of 2005, members of the Sooner Unit assisted the Girl Scouts Red Lands Council with their annual meeting, and donated copies of Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised in Brief. In the Fall of 2003, the Sooner Unit assisted with the annual meeting (convention of delegates) of the Girl Scouts - Red Lands Council, held on October 25, 2003, in Oklahoma City. During the course of over sixty-five years, the Red Lands Council's jurisdiction has grown to fifteen Oklahoma counties: Alfalfa, Blaine, Dewey, Ellis, Garfield, Grant, Harper, Lincoln, Logan, Kingfisher, Major, Oklahoma, Pottawatomie, Woods, and Woodward counties, with 100 elected delegates representing over 5,000 Girl Scouts. Over the course of a couple of several months, members of the Sooner Unit met with the president, in person and by e-mail, and assisted with writing the convention script (which included a bylaws revision and elections), making recommendations for convention standing rules, and preparing the presiding officer for the meeting. A Registered Parliamentarian who is a member of the Sooner Unit, served as convention parliamentarian. The Sooner Unit donated five copies of Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised, which were awarded in a drawing to five Girl Scout service units with 100% participation at the convention. In addition, the Sooner Unit donated approximately $50 worth of handouts on parliamentary procedure to the meeting participants, including a motion card on the precedence of motions, and a list of Frequently Asked Questions. ----------------------------------- From time to time, members of the Sooner Unit assist with judging parliamentary competitions at all levels, for example FCCLA and HOSA. In addition, the Sooner Unit helps by donating copies of Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised and other parliamentary procedure books to local schools and youth groups.
