Fall 2003 Sooner Unit News:

The 2003 Fall project of the Sooner Unit was to assist with the annual meeting (convention of delegates) of the Girl Scouts - Red Lands Council, held on October 25, 2003, in Oklahoma City. During the course of over sixty-five years, the Red Lands Council's jurisdiction has grown to fifteen Oklahoma counties: Alfalfa, Blaine, Dewey, Ellis, Garfield, Grant, Harper, Lincoln, Logan, Kingfisher, Major, Oklahoma, Pottawatomie, Woods, and Woodward counties, with 100 elected delegates representing over 5,000 Girl Scouts.

Over the course of a couple of months, members of the Sooner Unit met with the president, in person and by e-mail, and assisted with writing the convention script (which included a bylaws revision and elections), making recommendations for convention standing rules, and preparing the presiding officer for the meeting. A Registered Parliamentarian who is a member of the Sooner Unit, served as convention parliamentarian.

The Sooner Unit donated five copies of Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised, which were awarded in a drawing to five Girl Scout service units with 100% participation at the convention. In addition, the Sooner Unit donated approximately $50 worth of handouts on parliamentary procedure to the meeting participants, including a motion card on the precedence of motions, and a list of Frequently Asked Questions.

Mary and Rod took the RP exam in September, 2001, at the NAP convention in Washington, D.C., and had this to say,

“We found it to be a very rewarding experience to set a goal for ourselves and to devote some time each day to achieving that goal. We found it extremely helpful to have another person to study with and to encourage each other. It actually made it fun to learn together and to bounce ideas around, working out the reasons for the answers given in the RP Study Guide. This greatly accelerated the learning process, and we believe we can mentor and repeat our success with other members who are willing to set the goal for themselves of taking the RP exam. We believe that encouraging members to study for and take the RP exam will strengthen the Oklahoma State Association of Parliamentarians and the NAP Units in this state.”

Rod and Mary Davidson
